Pantone vs CMYK vs RGB: Color Specs That Prevent Bag Reprints

Half of all bag reprint disputes start as a color conversation that went wrong three documents earlier: a designer approved a screen color, a factory matched a print chip, a customer compared the bag to their laptop, and three “same” colors became three different colors. The fix is not a better printer. It is knowing what each color system, RGB, CMYK and Pantone, actually is, which one to use at which step, and how to write color into a purchase order so the bag that ships matches the brand the buyer approved. This guide sets out the three systems for bag printing decisions.

RGB: The Screen Color That Cannot Print

RGB describes color as light on screens: red, green and blue channels combining to make millions of on-screen shades. It is the color space every digital file starts in and the reason screen approvals mislead: screens emit light and display ranges of bright, saturated color that printing processes physically cannot reproduce with inks. A teal that glows on a monitor will print duller, guaranteed, because ink reflects light rather than emitting it. The rule for buyers: RGB is where design files live, never the language of approval. Approving a bag color from a screen image is the first document in most reprint disputes, and the fix costs nothing: convert to a print-referenced system before anyone says yes.

CMYK: The Four-Color Process Reality

CMYK is process printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black inks layered as dots to build the full color range a print run can produce. Full-color photographic artwork, gradients, multi-color illustrations, prints in CMYK, and bag printing in screen print, heat transfer or digital processes all reference CMYK values. The honest limitation: CMYK’s range (gamut) is smaller than the screen’s, so certain bright oranges, greens and blues shift when converted, and identical CMYK values print slightly differently across materials, a navy on matte canvas and the same navy on gloss laminated PP read differently because the surface changes how the ink reads. Buyers running process-printed bags should approve a printed proof on the actual material, which is how our retail branding program handles process-color work: the proof travels with the order as the binding reference.

Pantone: The Contract Color

Pantone is a named-color system: each swatch is a numbered, standardized ink formula that any compliant printer in any country mixes to the same reference. It is the language of brand colors, and the reason it dominates bag programs is repeatability: a brand’s Pantone 286 C is the same blue this year, next year and across every factory, which CMYK conversion cannot promise. Spot-color Pantone printing costs a screen and a mixed ink per color, so programs weigh color count against process printing: logos and brand colors run spot Pantone for exactness, photographic artwork runs CMYK for range. The authority in the space is the system itself, and Pantone’s own resources document how the matching system and its physical swatch books work. One trap worth naming: Pantone colors are defined on paper swatches, and fabric prints read differently, so bag programs confirm the Pantone number on a fabric strike-off, not on the paper book.

Writing Color Into the Purchase Order

Three lines end most color disputes before they start. One: colors specified by Pantone number for brand-critical elements, with the note “match on final material, fabric strike-off approval required.” Two: process artwork referenced in CMYK values with a printed-on-material proof as the approval artifact. Three: a tolerance statement, because textile and PP printing carries process variation; “no visible difference at arm’s length against the approved strike-off” is an enforceable standard, while “exact match” is not. Buyers who want the full chain, from color spec to strike-off to production, can see how the sampling sequence works on our custom drawstring bag program, where free samples exist precisely so color is argued on fabric, not in email.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Why did my printed bag look different from my screen design?
Screens emit RGB light with a wider color range than CMYK inks can reproduce; converting to print always narrows saturation. Approve from a printed proof on the actual bag material, never from a screen.

When should I print Pantone instead of CMYK?
For brand-critical solid colors that must repeat exactly across orders and factories: spot Pantone costs a screen per color but buys contractual repeatability.

Does the same Pantone print identically on canvas and laminated PP?
Not identically: the material changes how ink reads, which is why the spec should say “match on final material” with a fabric strike-off as the approval.

What is a strike-off?
A small test print of the actual design on the actual production material, approved before the run; it is the binding color reference for the order.
