Every bag testing question eventually splits into two families: destructive tests that break a sample to learn its limit, and non-destructive tests that examine it whole. Choosing wrongly wastes production, fails a lot you never should have, or certifies a bag you never tested. This guide compares the two across the tests that matter for bags, explains which belongs on which batch, and shows how to build a sampling plan that uses both without over-testing.
The families and where each belongs
Destructive tests break the sample: seam tensile, tear resistance, bursting strength, drop and abrasion tests that ruin the piece to measure its limit. These give you the real numbers behind load claims, but only on the samples you sacrifice. Non-destructive tests examine without breaking: visual and dimensional checks, weight verification, print alignment, stitch density counting, and some forms of leak or closure-function testing. These inspect every unit or a broad sample cheaply but cannot tell you the tear limit your seam will never reach. The test methods behind both families are maintained by standards bodies such as BSI and the physical testing labs they support, and the deciding rule is simple: destructive for capability, non-destructive for conformity.
What each catches, and what it misses
A destructive seam test tells you whether a batch’s seams can carry their rated load, and it tells you on the samples you broke, not the ones you shipped. Non-destructive inspection tells you every checked piece meets its visual and dimensional spec, but it cannot measure strength a lookalike seam hides. The gap between the two is the classic bag failure: the batch passes visual inspection on all units, and the one seam that was under-stitched failed the tensile test because only two samples made it to the lab. Matching the test to the risk is the craft, and the risk profile of a bag program changes with use: a cheap checkout bag tolerates a visual program, a load-bearing moving bag does not.
Building a sampling plan that uses both
The effective plan layers the two. At interval or first-article: destructive tests on a small, fixed number of units sacrificed from the batch, calibrated so the destructive number reflects the capability you rely on.
