Bag Gusset Types: Folded Depth, Expanded Depth and Freight Impact

Quick answer: A bag gusset is the folded side or base panel that turns a flat bag into a three dimensional one, and it is measured folded or expanded. A 100 mm folded gusset opens to 200 mm, which decides the carton size, the pallet count and the load a tote carries without sagging.

Four Gusset Types And What They Do

Gussets are named by where they sit. A side gusset opens the width, a bottom gusset opens the depth, and a bag with both is sold as a three dimensional or D-shape bag. The choice follows the contents, not the design taste, because a folded panel changes how the bag stands and how it packs.

  • Side gusset: two folded side panels, the standard retail tote format.
  • Bottom gusset: one folded base panel, common on wine and bottle bags.
  • Side and bottom: a full three dimensional bag for boxed goods.
  • Centre gusset: a single fold in the middle, used on flat pouches and dust bags.
  • Accordion gusset: multiple folds that expand to twice the flat width.

Folded Against Expanded Depth

Every gusset carries two numbers, and quoting only one causes a carton that does not close. The folded figure sets the packing size, and the expanded figure sets what the bag holds. The table below covers the sizes most often ordered for retail and moving programmes.

Bag format Folded gusset Expanded depth Typical use Load note
Retail tote, 380 by 420 mm 100 mm 200 mm grocery and apparel 8 to 10 kg
Wine bag, 320 by 350 mm 90 mm 180 mm two bottle carry 4 to 5 kg
Moving bag, 600 by 700 mm 150 mm 300 mm bedding and clothing 20 to 25 kg
Dust bag, 250 by 400 mm 60 mm 120 mm shoes and small goods 2 to 3 kg
Boxed gift bag, 300 by 250 mm 120 mm 240 mm carton shaped gifts 3 to 4 kg

How Gusset Depth Changes Freight

Depth drives the carton, and the carton drives the freight. A 380 by 420 mm bag with a 100 mm gusset folds to a stack of 12 mm to 15 mm per piece, so 500 pieces fill about 0.09 cubic metres. Adding 50 mm of gusset takes the same stack to 18 mm per piece and the same order to 0.12 cubic metres, which is 30 percent more volume for no more product.

Buyers who plan pallet counts early avoid that cost. A standard pallet of 1200 by 1000 mm carries 40 cartons of 400 by 300 by 300 mm, and one extra centimetre of carton height across a full container adds up to a pallet that no longer fits the door height of a retail distribution centre.

Gusset Construction Details That Fail In Use

Three faults appear on gusseted bags after a few months of use. The fold cracks where the coating is thin, the bottom seam splits when the bag is lifted by one handle, and the gusset twists because the fold was not set with heat before sewing.

Each is fixed in production rather than at inspection. A coated fabric needs a 20 mm to 30 mm allowance at the fold to keep the coating continuous, a box X stitch at the handle root spreads the load across the seam, and a heated blade run before folding sets the crease so the bag opens flat every time. A factory that checks 5 pieces per 500 for fold cracking catches the issue on the line.

Specifying Gussets For A Tender

A gusset specification needs five lines: the bag face size, the folded gusset, the expanded depth, the fold construction, and the tolerance. A plus or minus 5 mm tolerance on a folded gusset is normal, and a buyer who leaves it out receives bags that vary enough to change the carton plan.

Order one pre production sample with the gusset set and photographed flat, then keep that photo in the purchase order. It costs one sample and removes the argument about whether a delivered fold matches the approved one. Tender documents that include that photo receive consistent production across repeat orders.

Questions fréquemment posées

What is a gusset on a bag?

A folded side or base panel that gives the bag depth. It is quoted in two figures, the folded size and the expanded depth, usually at a 2 to 1 ratio.

How deep should a tote bag gusset be?

Fifty to one hundred millimetres folded for a 380 by 420 mm retail tote. Moving bags run 150 mm folded to reach a 300 mm expanded depth.

Does gusset depth affect shipping cost?

Yes. A 50 mm increase in folded gusset raises folded stack height by around 20 percent, which adds roughly 30 percent to the carton volume for the same order.

Why do gussets crack on coated bags?

Because the fold allowance is too small. A 20 mm to 30 mm allowance keeps the coating continuous through the crease; a tight fold cracks it within months.

Buyers comparing formats can review the ranges on sacs en toile, and the inside of the bag is covered in tote bag liner and pocket options. Cord closure choices sit in Types de cordons pour sacs à cordon. Dimensional tolerances for textile bags follow the standards published by the International Organization for Standardization.
