A floppy tote sells once; a structured tote sells every year. Retail buyers upgrading from basic promotional totes to sellable bag programs ask the same question: what makes the bag stand up? The answer is a stack of structure options, bottom boards, base stiffeners and interlinings, each with a cost, a freight consequence and a durability profile. The three structure upgrades, compared

Bottom boards, cut plastic or chipboard sheets dropped into a removable base pocket, give the fastest structural upgrade and stay replaceable. Bonded base stiffeners sewn into the construction lower the profile and cannot migrate, at the cost of a harder wash story. Full interlinings stiffen the whole body, changing drape, print feel and shipping cube at once. The base-stiffener route is the middle path most retail programs land on: structure where the eye judges it, flexibility where the bag folds for shipping. Materials: board choice, and the wash caveat

Board material splits by environment. Chipboard is cheapest and swells if soaked; HDPE plastic sheet costs more and survives washing programs; recycled board splits the difference and carries the sustainability story many retail programs print on the hangtag. Spec lines to write into the PO

Three lines keep structure consistent across reorders. Board specification: material, thickness in millimeters, and whether it is removable. Base dimensions: the board must match the finished base within a tight tolerance, because an undersized board shifts and an oversized one bows the side seams. And a stand test at inspection: the filled bag should stand unsupported for a defined time, which turns structure from an opinion into a pass-fail check. Programs upgrading structure without these lines meet the classic failure, first order stands, reorder slumps, and the difference traces to a board nobody specified.
